HINKLEY Point protestors blocked the nuclear plant's main gates for almost an hour on Sunday during a weekend of action.

A large group of campaigners held banners and placards in front of the site, preventing any traffic movements from 11.45am to 12.45pm.

They were protesting against EDF Energy's plans for two new reactors, and its application to West Somerset Council and the Marine Management Organisation for permission to clear wood and grassland, possibly as soon as this autumn, in preparation for Hinkley C.

Crispin Aubrey, spokesman for Stop Hinkley, said: “There is obvious strong feeling against destroying this beautiful area.

“Despite being close to the existing power stations there are large expanses of beauty and tranquillity.

“It's wrong for EDF to jump the gun by trashing the area such a long time before it receives major consents for the two reactors.”

An EDF spokesman said: “Although we respect the rights of individuals to peaceful protest, we are sympathetic to the pressure these events can place on the local community with whom we have strong links.”
