THE opening of Cutcombe livestock market has been hailed by campaigners as a boost for hill farming.
The Exmoor Society, who have been campaigning in support of hill farming, say its helps maintain the landscape, wildlife and heritage in the uplands.
Society chairman Rachel Thomas said: “Cutcombe Market gives a major boost to the confidence of local farmers and the large turnout at the opening of the many people involved in developing a first class facility, is a testament to its importance.
“ It goes against those who argued the future for livestock markets is only to be found in the large super ones being developed regionally.”
A society spokesman added: “Such good facilities close at hand will help get better prices for sheep and cattle, as well as comply with the plethora of health and safety regulations.
“The layout and design of the buildings have been sensitively developed so it fits well into the landscape.”
Campaigners say that without livestock, moorland would revert to impenetrable scrub, leading to a loss in biodiversity and closing out important views.
