A GROUP of youngsters from Watchet have released a DVD warning others of the dangers of tombstoning.

The short film, Don't Leap Into The Unknown, highlights the dangers of leaping into the sea from cliffs and harbour walls.

The film features local harbour jumpers talking about their experiences, the accidents they have witnessed and the hazards involved, such as breaking bones or being knocked out.

The reasons people tombstone are also discussed and include the adrenalin rush and peer pressure.

Since 2005, there have been ten deaths attributed to harbour jumping or tomb stoning in the UK and at least 38 serious injuries.

In 2008, a 16-year old tragically drowned after entering the water at nearby Minehead Harbour at night.

Cllr Dave Westcott, a Watchet Town Councillor, said: “Organisations have urged youngsters not to harbour jump, or tombstone, for years, but we all know the advice often falls on deaf ears.

“It is really good local young people have spoken up to offer others the benefit of their experience.”

Pete Hughes, West Somerset Council's Community Safety Officer, brought the youngsters together with services such as the RNLI, coastguard, Royal Yachting Association, fire and rescue services, police, youth services and local councils.

He said: “It became apparent to all of us that nothing can completely stop it, but the youngsters felt something positive could be done to lessen the dangers by making people aware of the risks they are taking.”

Copies of the DVD are being distributed to organisations, who are being asked for a small donation to a charity involved in sea safety, and are also available by ringing West Somerset Council on 01643-703704.
