A RALLYING cry has gone out to Weekly News readers to help unmask the “callous” culprits who dumped more than 100 dead animals in a river near East Huntspill.

Secret World Wildlife Rescue founder Pauline Kidner said the grisly discovery was one of the worst she has ever known.

Over 40 dead ducks and chickens were retrieved from the water at Cripps River along with plastic bags full of the rotting remains of around 60 other animals on Friday morning.

A dead cat was also found but a tiny kitten was saved and has now been re-homed.

Mrs Kidner told the Weekly News: “It wasn't until we realised what was in the bags that I knew I had never seen anything as bad as this.

“We haven't had any response from the public as to who is responsible yet but I would urge people to make sure wildlife crime is reported.

“You may see something and think it's not worth mentioning, but it could be the piece of the jigsaw police are looking for.”

A passing motorist tipped off the rescue centre after spotting a cage full of ferrets in the river and a young kitten running around.

The ferrets are now being cared for at the organisation's East Huntspill base.

Mrs Kidner added: “It looks as though someone has taken on all these animals but it has got too much for them.

“Any information on this cruel act could be useful in finding the person responsible for such callous actions.”

Police and the RSPCA are also investigating and anyone with information should contact police on 0845-4567000.
