THREE men have been arrested following a violent robbery on Minehead beach in the early hours of Tuesday.

Three suspects, aged 19, 20 and 23, all of Minehead, were arrested within minutes of the incident, in which the victims – two men – were robbed of items including a phone and wallet.

The attack happened at about 1am.

Police say they increase patrols during the busy summer season in response to a heightened risk of crime.

Insp Lisa Simpson, of Minehead police, said: “This was a violent crime but it is fortunately very rare in West Somerset.

“The victims were targeted and robbed in a vulnerable situation.”

Insp Simpson added: “Minehead is a safe place to live, work and visit.

“During 2009-10, we only had one report of robbery or crime similar to this incident and we detected and dealt with it very quickly.

“We work hard to prevent violent crime such as this and work with local businesses and residents to make sure the night-time economy in Minehead can be enjoyed safely and responsibly.

“We plan our work to deal with the increase in population during the summer season, including an increased police presence and patrols at key times, particularly during the evening and late-night licensing hours.”

Insp Simpson has offered personal safety advice including understanding your alcohol limits, arranging transport home beforehand and being discreet with cash and mobile phones.

The three men arrested have been bailed.
