THE rebuilding of three Bridgwater schools WILL go ahead, it was announced on Friday, but the future of three others remain in the balance.

Education Secretary Michael Gove said that 33 schools – including Chilton Trinity, Elmwood and Robert Blake - have been given the go-ahead.

All six schools were in line to be rebuilt under Building School for the Future - but the project has been scrapped and now Haygrove, Penrose and East Bridgwater are still on hold and await the results of a spending review in September.

Mr Gove said: “I know how hard councils and schools have worked on these projects and I have been anxious to ensure we can do everything we can, in difficult economic times, to support the crucial work of raising educational standards.

“Planning for these projects is well advanced and we are keen they should proceed without further delay.”

A new programme considering the remaining schools will be released at the end of the year following the spending review, but for now, they will not be rebuilt.

Bridgwater MP Ian Liddell-Grainer said: “I am obviously disappointed with the decision but pleased three have got the go ahead.

“I am bitterly disappointed and I will be asking Michael Gove to reconsider the other three schools.

“I am not happy for obvious reasons because Bridgwater deserves the other three schools. The fight goes on.”
