A BRAVE Bridgwater cabbie has described how he fought off two thugs who viciously attacked and robbed him after he picked them up.

Jeffrey Weston, 54, had only just started his Saturday night shift when he collected the two men at 11.15pm from the H Cabs office in St Mary's Street, for a trip to aPurley Drive.

But instead of paying for their ride, the yobs smashed the father-of-five across the head with a bottle - before pinching his phone and satellite navigation system.

Mr Weston told the Mercury: “They were quite normal when I picked them up - there was no bad atmosphere at all.

“But when we got to Purley Drive, one of them came around to my window to ask how much the fare was - then hit me with a bottle.

“I began struggling with him, while the other one stole my phone and sat-nav and started hitting me too.

“I then managed to lean on my horn and they ran off. It was totally out of order.”

The men did not make off with any cash but Mr Weston, of Longstone Avenue, had to be treated in hospital for cuts to his head and bruises on his face and arms.

Police are trying to find two men in their early 20s, who were both wearing grey hooded tops, in connection with the incident, which happened on July 3.
