A BURNHAM woman whose son suffers from a form of autism took advantage of a free training course held in the town.

Debbie Green took part in St John Ambulance's carer support programme which saw 13 carers turn out to sharpen existing skills and learn some new ones.

Debbie said she found the course extremely helpful as she looks after her eldest son Henry who has Asperger's Syndrome.

She said: “To Henry routine is important. He doesn't like change and hates crowded situations so everything has to be planned meticulously.

“I can't even leave him playing outside with his younger brother and sister because he is so unpredictable and can get aggressive very quickly.

“I often feel guilty and have felt a failure as a parent which has led to depression. I worked as a mid-wife but had to give this up because looking after Henry is a full time job.

“I've found the course very helpful, not only learning new skills for looking after Henry but also meeting other carers and sharing experiences and swapping ideas.

“It's also given me three hours off each morning during the course which has really recharged my batteries. I'd recommend it to all carers.”

The programme, run in association with Somerset County Council and the Primary Care Trust, is open to all carers and includes a light lunch.
