A CAR mechanics course on Exmoor designed to drive down anti-social behaviour involving young people and their vehicles has been hailed a success.

The first Pit Stop Scheme, run by Exbridge Motors, Avon and Somerset Police and the Safer Somerset Partnership, helped young people aged 17-22 learn about vehicle maintenance, the law and road safety.

The six-week course was designed with the help of Nick Prouse from Exbridge Motors, located in Exbridge, near Dulverton.

Sergeant Andy Whysall, from the Exmoor Policing Team, said: "It has been great to see those involved learning so much and getting so much out of this scheme.

“Nick Prouse has been very generous with his time and without his help this initiative would never have taken place. I hope the students enjoy a well-deserved day out karting.

“It has been great to be able to engage with the youngsters and provide this course."

The scheme covered topics such as maintenance, fuel economy, general mechanics, noise, pollution and the legalities surrounding number plates.

PC Pete Doolan from the Road Policing Unit also taught them about the law and provided them with information about road safety from the Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service's road safety vehicle, 'The Pimp Van'.

Those who completed the course received a certificate and an invitation to take part in a karting session in Exeter.
