MINI musicians at Dunster First School have won medals for their melodies.

Over the past two terms, the school’s recorder and flute teacher Sue Fletcher has been busy preparing a group of nine children for the Music Medals assessments run by the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM).

In their assessment for the Copper Music Medal the children, all Year 4s, had to play an individual line in an ensemble piece for two, three or four players.

Youngsters then had to play a solo piece and show their musicianship skills in a ‘call and response’ exercise.

On the day of the assessment the children’s performances were videoed, marked by Mrs Fletcher, and sent off to the ABRSM for moderation.

And after a nervous three weeks, the school was told all nine pupils had passes with some receiving an ‘excellent’ rating for parts of their assessment. Their certificates were presented in assembly on Friday (May 7).

Head teacher Peter Hoyland said: “We are delighted that the children did so well.

“I would like to thank Mrs Fletcher for all her hard work and dedication and also the parents of the children for encouraging them to practice!”
