A MUM who missed her only son’s wedding because of the ash cloud caused by a volcano in Iceland finally got to see him tie the knot on Sunday – thanks to the people of Stogumber.

Lorraine Tribe was holidaying in Morocco when volcano Eyjafjallajokull began spewing out ash – enough to shut all UK airports.

Despite numerous attempts to try and get back to England, Lorraine soon realised she was not going to make it back in time to see son Daniel Barnes walk up the aisle, eventually setting foot on home soil four days after the big day.

The wedding could not be postponed because Daniel serves in the Royal Mechanical and Electrical Engineers and had to be back on base to continue training.

But worshippers from the village church in Stogumber had a plan – they ditched their usual Sunday service for the Revd Valerie Plumb to officiate a wedding blessing for Daniel and his new wife Kelly.

The choir, organist, bell ringers and priest all gave their time free of charge to re-create the special day for Lorraine.

Other churches in the Benefice of Quantock Towers agreed to reorganise their service schedules to allow the blessing to go ahead.

Lorraine said: “I would like to say a huge thank-you to everyone who gave up their time and did it all for nothing. It shows what a village is all about.

“So many people gave up their time and it was a total repeat of the original service but instead of signing marriage certificates they lit a candle. It was magical.”

Husband Ken, who was also caught up in the chaos, said: “It was so nice seeing the village out and celebrating alongside us. That’s what I like about this place – it’s such a great community.”

Rev Plumb said: “It is so wonderful to have the opportunity to put the church back where it should be – in the heart of the community and working alongside its people.”
