THE West Somerset Morris Men have become victims of their own success.

The group said requests to dance at events this summer had been “overwhelming” and admitted having to turn down about 30 invitations.

Group squire Mitch Wearing said: “Our programme from May to the end of August takes in over 40 venues covering our traditional Thursday evenings round West Somerset as well as weekend events.

“We have already turned down about 30 invitations and they are still coming in!”

As well as their local events, the men will be making their first visit to the Weymouth Folk Festival in June.

The Morris Men start their programme this weekend with six performances. On Saturday (May 1) they will be at the Nether Stowey May Fair dancing at 11.20am and 12.40pm.

On the Monday they will be at the Milverton Street Fair dancing at 11.30am and 12.30pm. And in the afternoon they will be at the Luxborough Duck Race dancing at 3pm and later.

After a short break, the dancers will be at Cotford St Luke near ‘The Chapel’ at 8pm next Thursday (May 6) before moving to ‘The Bird in Hand’ at Bishops Lydeard at about 9pm.
