Plans to demolish Falmouth's Admiral Nelson pub and build 45 flats on the site have been stopped by Carrick council.

The planning referrals committee cited objections from English Heritage and Falmouth Civic Society as their chief reasons for refusing the application.

The development, which would have taken place on the border of Falmouth's conservation area, was also objected to by Falmouth town council on the grounds it would have been over-development and lead to the loss of a building of historical importance.

Residents were angry about the development and a petition containing 338 signatures objecting to the site was submitted to Carrick.

A spokesman for Pub Estates Co Limited, who own the pub, said they were not sure whether it would still be sold after they failed to gain planning permission: "We have to think about our options."
