The first pub to become a victim of the foot and mouth crisis last year has closed its doors for the last time.

The Carnarvon Arms Hotel which stands beside the River Barle in the village of Dulverton on the edge of Exmoor, suffered such a loss of trade during the foot and mouth crisis that its owner, Toni Jones, had no alternative but to close.

It was a tremendous blow to the community, but reflected the severity of the crisis which put a ban on walkers and riders using this popular beauty spot on Exmoor.

After the crisis, Mrs Jones tried to resurrect the business but alas it failed and now the hotel and pub has closed for the last time.

Built by the Earl of Carnarvon in 1874, its rooms played host to country sports fanatics, offering some of the best hunting, fishing and shooting in England.

For 130 years, the hotel epitomised the grand lifestyle of rich and famous country lovers in West Somerset.
