THE ABSENCE of Sir Tim Rice and a downpour of rain could not dampen the spirits at St Keverne School as pupils and staff opened their new swimming pool.

The new £40,000 pool was opened with a special ceremony by pupils from St Keverne and Coverack Schools, which included a brass band performance and a big "thank-you" to all the donors.

Sir Tim, the famous composer, was meant to open the pool in his capacity as chairman of the Foundation for Sport and the Arts (FSA), which put up £20,000 towards the pool. But he had to cancel at the last minute as his mother was taken ill. In his place, the pool was opened by PTA chairman Anne Rowe and member Sharon Stephens.

The project has been a masterful piece of fundraising by the school, headed by teacher Helen McFarlane and PTA chairman Anne Rowe.

As well as the FSA, donors included national lottery's Awards For All, the Pirate Trust and the Penwith Community Development Fund, as well as local people who supported it.

All of them were thanked by the children and by headteacher Nigel Warbis. Mr Warbis singled out Mrs McFaralane and Ms Rowe for special praise, saying that it was their hard work and dedication that had made the scheme possible.
