THE Greenbank Rowing Club duo of Ron Coote and Colin Blackmore became the latest golden boys of Cornish rowing after they secured their first success of the season at the National Veterans' Championship held on Holme Pierpont, Nottingham at the weekend.

Racing in the Veteran D (average age 50) coxless pairs event, over 1,000 metres, they overcame the considerable talent of the Wallingford/Upper Thames combination (former Henley winners) to win by two lengths with Bradford-on-Avon in third place. There were two other boats making up the five boat final.

The pair are celebrating their 25th year of competing together, and will be racing at Henley Veterans' Regatta next month which is an international event, and hope to compete in the World Masters event in Prague the weekend of September 7-8.

"We really didn't expect to be among the medals," said Ron, "more around the fringes, but on the day it just happened for us and we were both delighted with the outcome.
