Mullion had a day they will want to forget on Saturday. They endured what is the nightmare scenario of travelling from the county's most Southerly cricket outpost to the eastern equivalent at Callington, only to have a game ruined by the weather with only 26.5 overs play possible.

Having spent much of Saturday morning on the road, Mullion arrived at New Road to find, not surprisingly after the recent wet spell, a soft, green pitch.

Home skipper Jamie Hatch had no hesitation in asking the visitors to bat. Drizzle was in the air and the conditions were only to get worse on yet another miserable Saturday this season..

Mullion lost Dave Lockwood with the score at 11, caught by Dominic Farris off Mark James for 9. Then Wayne Vincent was run out without scoring to leave Mullion in early trouble.

Gareth Taylor, who opened the innings, dug in with Simon Wherry but scoring was difficult with the ball not coming on to the bat.

Line and length was the order of the day for James and Somerset bowler Peter Trego. Both were very economical only conceding around one run an over.

Wherry was eventually bowled by Trego for 13 with the score on 35 at which point play was halted at 2.20pm after 26.5 overs. Taylor was undefeated on 11, a sign of how difficult run scoring was for the normally prolific Australian.

The teams hung around until after tea with Callington keen to restart if possible if the overs were reduced to a minimum of a 40 over game, as they would have been in a strong position knowing their low target. There was no chance of a resumption though and Mullion were left to face a long, wet and dismal trip home with six points for the abandonment which still leaves them without a win at the foot of the table.

If the weather allows there is a busy weekend ahead with the second double Premiership weekend of the season.

St Buryan visit Garro Lane on Saturday and Mullion will be keen to repeat the form in early May that almost brought them a win against the Saints.

On Sunday there is another home game when Callington face the long trip west with a quick opportunity to renew acquaintances.
