FED up young people in Minehead are planning to demonstrate on the town's streets.

But although the message behind their protest on July 6 will be a serious one, they also hope to impress passers by with their skills.

The youngsters will be staging a skateboarding demo on the seafront in the hope of highlighting the need for a dedicated park for the sport and the lack of facilities generally in the resort.

A newly formed youth working group has been working closely with business and community leaders involved in the Minehead Coastal Towns Initiative, in a bid to show their determination to be part of any future regeneration plans.

Youth group chairman Richard Williams said the initiative was an exciting opportunity for the young people to get a badly needed recreational facility.

But leading member Neil Parbrook explained: "Although the skateboard has much support, identifying and acquiring a suitable piece of land has so far been a major stumbling block for moving the project forward."

The special skateboarding day has won the support of Butlins, the police, the youth service, the West Somerset Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership, West Somerset District Council and Minehead trader Chaos.

It will take place on the promenade close to the roundabout near Butlins.
