MID Devon's new "get tough" police policy on racism has netted its first offenders.
This week, two adults were officially cautioned and three juveniles reprimanded over an incident that occurred at a kebab house in Tiverton.
Police say that on Saturday May 25, they were called to the Marmaris Kebab House in Gold Street, Tiverton, a fast food takeaway run by Turkish families.
They were there to deal with an incident that had initially started by juveniles being racially abusive to the staff. It escalated into a physical situation where a number of people were assaulted.
A police investigation was launched. As a result, three teenage juveniles were reprimanded for racially motivated offences on Monday and the two adults cautioned for public order offences on Tuesday.
Inspector Nevin Hunter, head of Tiverton police, said "We take all public order and violence offences very seriously, particularly where there are racial overtones. Our action clearly sends out a message that this behaviour will not be tolerated in Tiverton."
