FALMOUTH school maths teacher Martyn Truman won through to the final award ceremony of the Teaching Awards for the South West.
The awards are made in partnership with BT to celebrate the vital role teachers play in the community, to highlight excellence and encourage best practice.
The ceremony was held at Powderham Castle, near Exeter, and was covered by BBC television.
Mr Truman, 53, who lives at Ponsanooth, was one of four nominees for the Lifetime Achievement Award who were short-listed for the teaching profession's equivalent of the Oscars.
The outright winners will be invited to the national finals at the Theatre Royal, London.
Mr Truman has been teaching maths at Falmouth Community School for 26 years, during which time he has also been head of Sixth Form and examinations registrar. His son, Paul, a former student at the school, won a place at Cambridge University this year to study maths.
