THE overall quality of teaching provided for pupils at King Charles Primary School in Falmouth has been praised in a report by Government Inspectors which also highlights very good behaviour of pupils and their positive attitudes towards learning, and the partnership with parents and the local community.

The report notes the improvements made since the last inspection and concludes that the school has the capability to make further improvements.

"King Charles provides a satisfactory standard of education. High expectations encourage pupils to achieve well. The school cares for its pupils well. There is a welcoming atmosphere and good relationships have been established."

Head teacher Tim Holway said: "I'm delighted that the report highlights that standards are above average here and achieved in a school where the children are well behaved and well looked after."

The report commends the overall quality of teaching and the standards attained by pupils in many subjects. Particular praise is given to the quality of teaching in Years 1-3, the teaching of pupils with special educational needs and behaviour management. It also commends the standards attained in PE and music, which is described as a strength of the school.

"Teaching is satisfactory with many areas of strength. Staff provide positive role models. Teachers throughout the school have good strategies or behaviour management and have high expectations of the way pupils behave. This results in classrooms where pupils are well behaved and eager to learn."

The inspectors also praise the "very good" provision for pupils with special educational needs, who, they say, achieve well; the personal development of pupils and the good range of extra curricular activities.

The inspectors also praise the organisation and administration of the school. "The headteacher has a clear educational direction. He and the senior management team monitor the quality of teaching and learning satisfactorily and provide sound leadership to the school. The Governors support the headteacher and the senior management team satisfactorily and have a sound understanding of the many strengths and weaknesses into the school.

"The efficient systems and friendly courtesy of the school staff, who are often the first point of contact for parents and visitors to the school, contribute significantly to the smooth running of the school and have a positive effect on teaching and learning."

Pupils are described as well behaved and displaying positive attitudes to their work. "Behaviour at school is very good. Pupils are polite and courteous and work and play together very well. They show respect for the dealings of others."

"Pupils have good attitudes to school and talk readily about their enjoyment in coming to school. They are eager to learn and sustain concentration well during lessons. They participate well in activities and most take up opportunities to join in the various clubs and out of school activities, in sport, drama and music. This enriches the curriculum available and helps personal development.

The school's links with parents and the wider community are commended. "Most parents have a positive view off the school and feel that it does a good job for their children. They like the teaching and the management of the school and say that their children are making good progress. Their contribution to the work of the school and to their children's education is good. "The school has good links with the community.

The inspectors also identified areas of action for governors and staff to continue the improvements that have taken place over the last few years:

Review the whole curriculum to provide a more rigorous and systematic plan of what should be taught and when.

Strengthen the role of the curriculum manager and the subject managers to ensure all teachers follow the school's curriculum plan appropriately, pupils in parallel classes receive the same curriculum and regular monitoring takes place.

Raise the attainment of the more able pupils in all subjects.

Improve the quality and quantity of resources in information and communication technology and design and technology.

Chairman of Governors, Ms Mandy Peck, said: "King Charles fully deserves the recognition it has received from the Ofsted Inspectors. Its many strengths are a direct result of the dedication and hard work of its headteacher and staff and I look forward to seeing the school move on from strength to strength."
