A cloudless sky provided the perfect backdrop for the traditional midsummer bonfire ceremony staged by members of the Landewednack Old Cornwall Society on Sunday.

Villagers gathered outside the Top House, at the Lizard, to watch youngsters from Landewednack Primary School begin the evening with their traditional dancing.

The procession then made its way to the claypits, where music from the school's recorder group kept a sizeable crowd entertained.

Master of ceremonies Colin Hendy welcomed all who attended and local minister, the Rev Bill Cole, gave the blessing.

Landewednack pupil Anna Shellis, chosen as this year's Lady of the Flowers, tossed the symbolic bunch of herbs bound with colourful ribbons on to a bonfire laid by Richard Woodmansey and lit by John Harris.

More music and singing followed, and pasties and other refreshments were served after the ceremony.
