Taunton Town skipper Paul West has been been forced to give up football through a long-term knee injury.
The news was broken by the club's chairman Tom Harris who said: "It's devastating, not only for Paul but for the club.
"I regard Paul West as Mr Taunton. His sheer enthusiasm has often carried us through games."
West, who lifted the FA Carlsberg Vase trophy at Villa Park in May of last year, played only 16 full games last season.
He underwent an exploratory operation recently and at first it was thought that he would be able to play again next season. But he has now been advised to quit.
"Paul would have been the ideal player for Dr Martens League football next season," added Mr Harris.
"We understand the Dr Martens League is more physical and this would suit Paul.
"Giving up football is a huge blow for him and we've suggested that perhaps he goes on a physio course.
"He will want to stay involved with the club in some way."
