Residents of Praa Sands were up in arms this week after a noisy beach party kept local people awake into the early hours of Sunday morning.

Margaret Hodges, who aired her displeasure at this week's Breage parish council meeting, said the volume of the music had been "horrendous".

"I had two pictures fall off the walls because the house was vibrating all night," she said. "I rang the police several times, including a 999 call, but nothing very much was done."

Neighbour Graham Orchard, who also contacted the police on several occasions, said children in his house had been kept awake all night.

"We found one man asleep in our garden and had another one looking through our windows," he added.

Attempts to contact the district council proved fruitless, and parish councillors said they would contact Kerrier to express concern that environmental health officers were not available out of hours.

Police spokeswoman WPc Jackie Swift said this week officers had gone to Praa Sands on two occasions following complaints about the party.

The music had initially been turned down, but officers had returned to the scene following further complaints.

After the second visit, there did not seem to be any recurrence of complaints, said WPc Swift.

The Praa Sands incident comes just a week after Helston residents were disturbed by a large party held on the edge of the town.

On that occasion, police allowed the event to continue after officers who went to the farm became concerned for their own safety.

WPc Swift said officers were continuing to collect statements from residents who had complained, with a view to pursuing a prosecution.

"We are quite limited when it comes to noise complaints," she said. "All we can do is to ask people to turn the music down. We can't just march in and arrest people and seize equipment."
