FALMOUTH 43pts

ST DAY 5pts

FALMOUTH maintained their impressive start to the new season with a comprehensive Cornwall League One victory over St Day.

Having won on the Saints' pitch just seven days earlier, Falmouth turned in an even more emphatic disply at the Recreation Ground.

St Day kicked off playing with the wind towards the school end and, after a period of pressure, their scrum half, Mark Williams took the ball from a scrum five, went blind and scored an unconverted try.

St Day had started well and good work by Matthew Downing with several long kicks out of defence and penetrating runs kept Falmouth on the defensive.

However, after 17 minutes a penalty goal by Kevin Thomas gave Falmouth the kick start they required and after forward pressure on the St Day line scrum half Kelvin Dagg ran through the defence to score a try which was converted by Kevin Thomas. Falmouth were now in top gear with forwards and backs working well together and further tries were scored by Kelvin Dagg and Shawn May after excellent driving work by David Roberts and support play by Darren Becconsall and Andrew Lancaster. Kevin Thomas converted the second try to make the half-time score 22 - 5.

Falmouth had the advantage of the wind in the second period and quickly scored two decisive tries through Adrian Downing and Guy Speedie which took the game away from St Day - especially as Kevin Thomas added the extras to both.

The Falmouth threequarters were now using the space of the Recreation Ground pitch to open up gaps in their opponents' defence with centres Adrian Downing and Darren Becconsall combining well and the quick reactions of this pair to a breakdown of a St Day attack led to the final try by Adrian Downing under the posts which Kevin Thomas converted.

The overall impression of this 43-5 victory is that Falmouth are continuing to improve and are now working as a close-knit team.

The back row of Jonathan Biggins, Andrew Lancaster and David Roberts is very impressive , working well as a unit and linking and supporting well with the backs who revel in the space which is created for them.

Falmouth have been drawn at home to Perranporth in the second round of the Powergen Vase.
