TRURO High School recently had a visit from a former head girl, Sophie Proctor. The reason for Sophie's visit was that she had just spent three months at Mlanda Girls Secondary School in Malawi with the organisation Africa and Asia Venture. During that time she kept in contact with the High School's nurse and swimming coach, Mrs Liz Burnard.

One of Mlanda School's favourite activities, reported Sophie, is netball but the school had no nets, no proper netballs and very flimsy hoops. Together, Sophie and Liz came up with the idea of a sponsored swim and 69 pupils and staff took part in a relay team swim, raising a fantastic £1,454.38.

Sophie now says that Mlanda Girls School has acquired four netballs, hoops, nets and team colours and that there is enough money left over to change the mud and grass court for a proper court with markings.

Sophie thanked the girls very much at a school assembly and spoke to the whole school about her time in Malawi. She would also like to thank Truro Cathedral for its wonderful support and Truro Sight Centre who sent out lots of games and learning aids in Braille for two blind girls at the school in Malawi.

Liz Burnard in turn would like to thank pupils and staff at the High School, especially team K - Eloise Brownless, Olivia Wilson-Holt, Rhonwen Parsons, Hannah Williams, Olivia James and Sam Horsefall - who together raised £312.44 towards the sponsored swim.
