REDRUTH 39pts

HAVANT 16pts

REDRUTH picked up their first National League Division Three (South) win when they defeated Havant in convincing fashion at the Recreation Ground.

Havant a had a massive pack with three forwards over 6 foot six and they had pace in the backs. They had also won two out of their three previous league games.

Playing down the slope, Havant took the lead in the12th minute when big lock forward Nick Allica, helped by his hooker Shane Croubeas and skipper Joe Duffett, crossed in the corner for a try, but the conversion failed.

The Reds countered within two minutes with a Steve Larkins try, a well deserved one after a powerful run. Marek Churcher launched the move from in front of the grandstand, slick passing sending Larkins over from a 30 metre run.

Brown kicked the conversion to give the home team the lead, a position they never surrendered.

Seven minutes later, Brown from about 30 metres, kicked a penalty award for a five-point lead.

Four minutes later centre Mark Richards ran well on the right for a try after good play by Larkins. The conversion failed, but the home side were10 points clear.

In the 35th minute Allica kicked a penalty goal.

Havant fly-half Classey tried to chip kick, but Richards deftly recovered the ball to race over at the posts from 50 metres. Brown converted for a 22-8 lead.

With injury time still being played, the Havant backs ran well after a forward surge, full-back Anton Petzer crossing in the left hand corner of the ground. The conversion failed.

Starting the second half, the Reds replaced winger Nick Edyvean with Jason Pengilly, a utility back.

In the 52nd minute John Court came on for Sam Heard and ten minutes later Sam Harrison replaced hooker James Geraty.

At the same time Brown kicked a penalty for a 12 point home lead.

Havant half-backs Classey and Jones needed close marking as did centres Davies and Jones.

Allica found the posts to cut Reds' lead to nine points for a "game on" situation.

Replacement Steve Matthews made a couple of charges with colleagues Kell and Archer, but the home side held out.

Nathan Pryor came on for Nathan Pascoe in the backrow.

With John Navin the main line out player, the Reds secured the ball, drove for the line in "Hell-Fire" corner, and Lancaster snapped up the try which Brown converted for a 32-16 lead.

The Reds were now in the "pound seats" and finally it was theKiwi duo of Lancaster with a try and Brown the conversion who sealed an encouraging performance.
