The public will be given a chance for a final say on Falmouth town centre's controversial traffic re-strictions next week.

Cornwall county council, who implemented the 11am to 4pm ban on cars through the town centre, are hosting the last public consultation meeting and are hoping to gauge public opinion on the restrictions.

John Sanders, the county surveyor and one of the council officers behind the scheme, said: "Hopefully we will get a response from the public at large and other organisations next week."

He said the county council had never really had any significant response from the public, either in favour or against the restrictions, and that he hopes he will be able to hear people's opinions on the scheme at next Tuesday's meeting.

The meeting, which will be held in the Falmouth council chamber and begins at 7pm, has also been organised to find out people's views on whether the restrictions should continue, how they could be improved and what should happen next summer.

Mr Sanders said the scheme had certainly had some bonuses, including a reduction in traffic through the town centre, and illegal parking between 11am and 4pm had all but dissappeared.

At the meeting Mr Sanders will also be releasing figures on the usage of Church Street car park and traffic flows through Falmouth town centre.

Town centre manager Peter Rugg, who has liaised with businesses and the county council, said: "It was never going to be a perfect scheme but I think we have all really learnt something from it.

"The county council is still looking to get it better and that's what we will be able to do at next week's meeting."

Mr Rugg is hoping more retailers will turn up than have at the other public consultation meetings so they can put their opinions across.
