WELLINGTON Town Council is appealing for a decision to be made over the future of the council offices.

The offices are currently based in The Squirrel Hotel in Wellington but the building failed to meet with the requirements of the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) and councillors have been holding their meetings in the United Reformed church hall for the last two years.

Councillors were told the building would have to be brought in line with the act at a cost of £62,000 or they would have to move to another base.

Taunton Deane Council has been searching for an alternative site, but Wellington councillors are frustrated at how long the process is taking and have called the matter before the council's review board on March 23 to find out what is going on.

Town and county councillor Ross Henley said: "We've not been informed about what's happening. We need to know what's going on. We've called it in for an update on the progress."

The town council is keen to remain at the Squirrel along with the other organisations and the museum, which operate from the building.

The Squirrel is also home to the Taunton Deane community office, the tourist information centre, Wellington and District Healthy Living Centre, the Citizens Advice Bureau and the Campaign for Learning.

All groups are concerned about their future in the town and councillors have been pushing to get a timescale on the decision.

But Stewart Rutledge, corporate property manage for Taunton Deane Council, has recommended that the search for a suitable site should continue.

He said: "We are constantly looking into the possibility of trying to get the town council and people there into more suitable accommodation but we haven't found anything at the moment."

Progress on the matter will be discussed by the review board on March 23.
