CHARD will soon be home to one of the world's youngest Rotarian presidents, when 26-year-old Tracey Murphy takes over the reigns of the town's club.
Tracey started accompanying the choir on the piano ten years ago and became involved with the club's weekly tinsel and turkey evenings in the run up to Christmas, and was soon asked to consider joining the club.
She said: “Because I knew them all really well and liked the work they did, I thought I would like to join and do something different.
“I really enjoyed it and they were so friendly and supportive.”
After years of raising money for charities with the club, Tracey decided to put herself forward as a president candidate.
In her new role, She will have to come up with new ideas for the year, hold weekly meetings and organise community projects to help further the club's fundraising activities.
Tracey added: “It is really worth while becoming a Rotarian. It is very rewarding and I get to work closely with the community, be involved in community projects and raise money for projects.”
While many people associate Rotary clubs with older men and slippers, Tracey has been an active member since her teens, and is keen to encourage others to follow in her footsteps.
She said: “I'm the only woman in the club - there's about 26 members - and it would be great to see more young people and women join. It really is a great opportunity and open to anyone.”
Chard Rotary Club has a number of activities coming up, each promoting the new leaflet, What Does Being a Rotarian Mean:
· Tuesday, March 16, at 6pm. A skittles evening at the Choughs Hotel, Chard. This is a chance to turn up, play skittles and talk to members and will be followed by supper at about 8pm.
· Saturday, April 17, from 10am to 2pm. The club will have a table at Chard Guildhall for the Showcase for Community Groups in Chard.
· Monday, May 3. The club will have a stand at the Cotley Hunt where people can talk to members.

The young lady will take over the 'reins', not 'reigns'.
I wish her a very fruitful term as Club President.
