Cash boost for Barrington FC

FUNDS to rebuild the fire-ravaged grounds of a football club near Ilminster received a £1,200 boost thanks to the efforts of one of its players.

A prize raffle in aid of Barrington Football Club was held by reserve team member Marcus Lewis at the Barrington Oak pub before Christmas.

Marcus organised the event following an arson attack in June last year, in which a building that housed changing rooms, toilets and a kitchen was torched.

The blaze ripped through the facilities and burnt a neighbouring portable cabin to the ground, causing an estimated £10,000 damage.

Players and committee chiefs have since rallied round to raise the cash needed to repair the damage. The raffle, held on December 19, was supported by businesses from around the area, including Ilminster’s Tesco store which donated a gift hamper and £100 towards the total.

Marcus said: “It was a really good night and very well attended by friends and family of the club.

“The support we’ve had from local traders was fantastic – it just goes to show what can be achieved with a bit of hard work.”

Marcus is pictured accepting a cheque for £100 from Tesco community champion Nicky De-Ath.
