TATWORTH Growing Together, the pioneering sustainable development project to grow food in the village’s community garden, is to benefit from a £5,000 grant.

Lord Cameron of Dillington, chairman of Somerset Strategic Partnership, contacted the parish council to inform them of their success in the SSP’s Sustainable Communities Competition.

He said: “The Judges were very impressed by Tatworth Growing Together from a number of aspects.

“They looked for community involvement and a strong environmental impact in the projects, also they were hoping for something that was innovative and visionary and yet possible for others to replicate.

“Your community crop production project scored highly on all these criteria. We were all impressed by your plans and the way you intend to bring a number of different sustainable practices together, with strong community involvement at the core.”

Cllr Andrew Turpin said: “This has been a joint effort and I should like to thank all those who have made this possible, I cannot single out any one person.

“Next year would like to expand and through the use of a double-glazed green house and a ground source heat pump produce ‘out of season’ and even Mediterranean type crops and reduce the need to import.

“This award has enabled applications to be made for other EU-sourced sustainable development grants.”

“But we will always need more volunteers and it’s a fun, healthy, non-pressurized activity so volunteers can come and go when they choose.”
