NEIGHBOURHOODS in Ilminster were getting a festive fine-tuning last week from a dedicated group determined to improve things for residents.

As part of the 'not in my neighbourhood' week, teams from the police, the fire brigade, housing group Yarlington Homes and South Somerset District Council have been out in Ilminster to tackle home safety and neighbourhood issues such as fly tipping and dog fouling.

PC Louise Wright said: “Today is all about the community. Together we wrote to all the residents here explaining what we are going to do and asking for their assistance.

“We've visited about 24 places to help with things such as home safety.

“With Christmas coming and the weather turning colder, help for safety is very important - especially with electrical appliances - but we're tackling any concerns in the home.”

“It's about working together to improve the community areas by making them cleaner and safer, it's about taking pride in our neighbourhoods.”

Street Scene's Chris Rowland added: “We're out on patrol but we need the support of the public to help keep our neighbourhoods clean.

“South Somerset is a big area, but everyone can help. If someone spots a dog owner not clearing up after their pet they should report it and we will issue a fixed penalty fine.”
