STUDENTS from across the county met in Ilminster on Wednesday to learn more about higher education opportunities after their access courses.

The open day, held at the Somerset Skills and Learning centre in Ditton Street, was described as ‘successful and enjoyable’ by tutors.

Organiser Caroline Knight said: “We teach access programs for Somerset Skills and Learning from Frome, Minehead and Ilminster.

“The Joint Centre Day is a chance for centres to meet and get to know each other – we had 27 learners here today.

“They also got to talk to representatives from nine different universities from places like Plymouth, Bath and Bristol, as well as Connexions staff.

“It all helps our learners to make decisions about where they are going next.

“It shows the students how valuable they are because universities come to see them and that gives them the confidence to make changes in their lives.”

Also present were successful former students such as John Daly, who is currently studying at the University of the West of England.

There are still places available for the January intake to the access programs, for details visit the centre in Ditton Street, Ilminster from 9am to 4pm, Monday to Friday, or contact 01460-53195.
