CARNIVAL night in Chard came to a grinding halt after a float became trapped under power cables forcing a change of route and an abandoned procession.
Only a couple of floats and walking entries had started the procession at 7.30pm before one float was trapped beneath power cables.
Fire crews worked hard to attempt to free the stricken vehicle but the procession didn't get underway until after 9.30pm.
The route was changed with the procession heading up Fore Street instead of the proposed route along Convent Link and Old Town.
Eyewitnesses described the scene as 'chaotic' and 'confused' as the floats came to a halt outside the Guildhall where the Carnival was abandoned.
