PRESTON Community School has become the first Links into Languages local centre in the South West.
Links into Languages is a Government-funded programme designed to support teachers, educators and all those working in the world of languages.
Philip Campagna, the Links into Languages reagional director, said he was delighted to welcome Preston School aboard.
Mr Campagna said: "Our aim is to delivery high quality professional development and training, increase access to support and offer information services for all language teachers, primary, secondary and HE.
"In order to enthuse children about languages, we have to ensure that their teachers have access to the best resources and training.
“Preston School will provide the facilities for us to be able to deliver high quality training and professional development courses for language teachers.
"This is also recognition of the tremendous work which takes place within the Modern Foreign Languages Department at Preston School.
"Recent examples include Year 8 pupils were involved in an innovative Sports and Language Project with Bath Rugby Club and pupils will soon experience some of their subject being taught in another language by Preston staff themselves.”
Mr Campagna was extremely delighted to be invited to the school for the signing of the agreement with the school principle Tony Bloxham and head of languages Mrs Dechirot.
The scheme will have nine regional centres, based at universities, supported by a network of Links Local Centres across England, where language professionals can take Links training courses, network and access the latest resources.
The Links Centres will be co-ordinated by the main regional centre.
Links aims to build a learning community of people working in languages education, offering professional development and support.
Links Local Centres may be based in schools, colleges, universities, local authority services or organisations with a commitment to support languages education.
The South West regional centre is based at Bath Spa University.
