THE Westfield area of Yeovil is set to undergo a major two-week makeover in August.
Front gardens, grass verges, streets and pavements will be tidied and cleared during the blitz, which is being run by the ever-growing Westfield Community Association with help from South Somerset District Council’s Streetscene team.
Residents are being encouraged to ‘pledge’ their time either to tidy their own garden or to volunteer to improve their neighbours’ gardens, trim hedges, mend fences or join in one of the organised community litter picks and makeover activities.
Those who take part will be invited to a community event to celebrate the outcome of the facelift at the end of the fortnight.
Cllr Tony Fife, Area South chairman for South Somerset District Council, said: “This will build on the huge amount of work done by local people and the community association last year during their clean-up.
“For South Somerset District Council is it genuinely pleasing, and exciting for the future, that the community here has achieved so much in a relatively short period of time and we’re pleased to have played a role in forming the association.”
Council chairman Cllr Ian Martin, who is also the ward member for the Westfield area, added: “They’ve already carried out clean ups, bulb planting and work with the police. It just goes to show how much can be done by a group of determined people committed to the area in which they live.
“Our Streetscene team will be clearing weeds from the side of the road, clearing up litter from the pavements and verges and roadsweeping.
“It’s not all about the improved appearance of the area, it’s also about the community aspect and the fact that people are taking pride in their area and getting together as a united community that is pro-actively making a difference.”
Funding for the makeover came from the council’s area development Team and a grant from The Co-operative.
The chairman of the Westfield Community Association, Chris Adcock, said: “People might like to repaint their garage doors or even just do a quick sweep of their driveways. Small things make a big difference.
“Last year two residents came forward and trimmed 18 people’s hedges, it was incredible.“ The makeover will be starting at 9.30am on Monday, August 10, outside the Co-op store on Stiby Road and will run until Friday, August 21.
