Thieves target Bridgwater charity

THIEVES struck again at Bridgwater charity, leaving exasperated staff ruing a string of attacks.

Workers at the Sedgemoor Furniture Store turned up for their shift on Wednesday to find the right-front wheel of their van stolen - and the vehicle up on bricks.

The theft meant the store was unable to collect furniture, which they resell to families with low incomes in the area, on their daily rounds.

Liz Bryant, assistant project manager at the store, told the Mercury: “It was upsetting to come in and find the van on bricks.

“Without the van we cannot pick up any furniture or do any deliveries.

“It is really frustrating.”

Staff claim the latest incident is just one of many attacks on their property, which has cost the charity around £600.

The Mercury told last August how robbers ransacked their furniture warehouse after getting in through a hole in the roof - taking cash and electrical goods.

Since then the charity claims its windows have been smashed and lights on its van have been stolen.

Now this latest incident has left them in despair.

Liz added: “Having been targeted in the past, it is very disappointing.

“We are absolutely fed up now - we are just trying to do our best for the community but we are being continually targeted.

“We just want them to leave us alone.”

Staff at the Sedgemoor Furniture Store are so disillusioned they have not even informed the police of the latest theft.

But police urged the store to get in touch.

A spokesman said: “We would encourage any victim of crime to come forward so we can fully investigate the incident.”
