A FEAST of football was enjoyed at the Alvington sports complex on Saturday in brilliant sunshine.
Young players battled it out for the Yarlington Cup and it was won by the over-11s side from Milford, while the top prize in the younger age group went to Crewkerne.
The runners–up in the under-10s age group played a final match for the Westland Community Trophy won by a team from Chard.
All the children who took part in the tournament received a players’ medal from Yeovil Town manager Terry Skiverton.
The tournament involved 17 teams from across the local area, which takes part in the social inclusion football coaching programme currently being run by Yeovil Town Community Sports Trust.
The tournament was organised by members of the Community Trust and the Royal Navy, with generous sponsorship from local businesses Con-naught, Southern Electric Contracting, Rok, Mansells and AgustaWestland.
The community football project, started last year with a pilot scheme at Southville in Reckle-ford, Yeovil, has grown with the aid of funding from the Somerset and Mendip Community Safety Partnership and several housing associations around Yeovil and district.
With courses now being held regularly at Crewkerne, Chard, Ilminster, South Petherton, plus Milford, Westfield and Southville in Yeovil, funding is now being sought to continue the projects for 52 weeks a year.
As well as the football, the Royal Navy sports presentation team was on hand with fitness training and a ‘beat the keeper’ machine for team members who still had energy to burn during their rest periods.
Community trust manager Adrian Hopper said: “We are naturally delighted that from a little acorn of an idea the scheme has now spread as far and wide as it has.”
