Holyrood welcomes Indian visitors

CHARD students are urging Somerset schools to join an international twinning scheme.

Holyrood Community School is encouraging other schools to form links with schools in developing countries.

Students and staff from the Green Valley School in Chennai, India, arrived in Chard on Monday to help foster links between the two schools.

Holyrood headteacher Maurice Hicks said: “The Global Partnership Scheme has helped our students to see how their lives and futures are closely linked to those of other young people across the world.

“Global issues such as poverty, climate change and all forms of injustice have been made more personal through the first-hand experiences this partnership has given our students.

This helps to encourage young people to see themselves as global citizens and motivates them to work for change and a better world for all.

“Our students have seen at first hand the many positive aspects of community life in India and the value given to education by young people there.”

Holyrood has had a partnership with Green Valley for the last 11 years and students and teachers take|it in turns to visit each|other’s schools and communities.

Staff also work together to develop curriculum projects for use in both schools so that all students can benefit.

Former Holyrood sixth-form student Hannah Crichton-Smith, who has visited Green Valley, said: “I gained a greater understanding of Indian life and culture and the visit really made me appreciate what I have here and what we can learn from each other.”
