A MAN is believed to have shot himself yesterday, following a police pursuit along a quiet country route in Catcott.

The 56-year-old man was found dead in a field between Catcott and Shapwick.

A police spokesman said officers had earlier attempted to trail the man on foot and in the air with the force helicopter at around 11.30am.

The Mercury understands police sealed off roads from Nydon Lane in Catcott, just past the Crown Inn, through to the end of Catcott Broad Drove in Burtle - not letting anyone in or out of their homes.

Chris Gilbey, who lives with his wife in Catcott Broad Drove, found himself in the thick of the drama when it unfolded.

He told the Mercury: “We heard there was a chap with a gun about.

“Police riot vans and cars were going up and down the road and I reckon there was two police helicopters flying around.

“My wife went to go out at about 1pm but the police said don't come any further - there's been a bit of trouble.

“It did not die down until about 4pm. You just don't expect stuff like this to happen down here.”

Police cars rushed to the scene from Bridgwater - screeching past locals in the Polden villages at high speed.

Another man, who did not want to be named, said a police officer told him they were looking for a man in his 50's wearing a green jumper, who would be looking 'a bit harassed'.

Following the man's death, which is not believed to be suspicious, the case has been passed to the coroner's office.

The incident has also been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission.
