THE streets of Taunton and Wellington are currently being filmed by internet giant Google for inclusion on their popular Street View feature.

In the past week a black car with a 6ft pole and camera fitted on the roof has been spotted patrolling the area.

However it could be 2010 before the residents of Taunton Deane are able to spot their own front doors on the internet.

Google spokeswoman Laura Scott said this week: “The filming and editing process takes many months so we are not in a position to say when any particular town will go ‘live’.

She added: “We know people have privacy concerns about this service but this is an issue we take very seriously.

“We take care to blur faces and licence plates so people cannot be indentified.

“If people are still unhappy they can always use a function on the website which allows people to remove an offending image.

“It is really, really easy to use although we have had fewer removals than we expected.”

Street View is a hugely popular feature of Google Maps which is already available in more than 100 metropolitan areas around the world.

The service allows people to view and navigate 360 degree street-level imagery in an increasing number of British towns.

In areas where Street View is available, you can access street-level imagery by zooming into the lowest level on Google Maps, or by dragging the orange ‘Pegman icon on the left-hand side of the map onto a blue highlighted street.
