Recipe for success as Burnham cake maker wins award

A BURNHAM businesswoman has told the Weekly News of her total shock - after a national company named her cake designer of the year.

Val Bagateles, who owns Especially For You 2 in the town's Cross Street, was given the award by Wedding Reviews UK for her creative designs and her services to customers.

The Burnham cake maker, who has been making a selection of wedding and birthday cakes for five years, was taken completely by surprise by the award - and told the Weekly News she was left "dumbstruck".

She said: "They just phoned me up and told me I had won - and I could hear clapping in the background.

"I told them that I hadn't entered the competition, but they said their directors had selected me after looking at my products and services.

"I was absolutely dumbstruck - I could not believe me and my little 15ft shop could win something."

After being crowned cake designer of the year, Val received a visit from the company, who presented her with a certificate and plaque - and Val will also soon feature on the front page of their magazine.

The award-winner began her cake making business from home and moved into her current Cross Street shop last year.

Val told the Weekly News she believed it was her personal touch in both cake making and design, which won her the award.

She said: "I cater for a number of dietary requirements and bake everything from scratch so I know what goes into it.

"I have very unusual requests for designs - once I was asked to make a model of the Empire State Building, because it was where a couple had met, and I have also made a table sized model of a Formula One car."
