HIGHBRIDGE has been selected to host a prestigious Olympic warm up event this summer, which will see world-class sportsmen from Europe converge on the town.
Burnham BMX Club has been awarded the Union of European Cycling open international pre-Olympic race, to take place at the Apex Park cycling track from July 25-27.
Four warm up races were allocated for the sport, with two in the Netherlands, one in Norway, and one in England - at the Burnham BMX Club.
The event will be held in conjunction with the National BMX series rounds eight and nine, to promise a weekend cycling spectacular.
There will also be elite and junior classes showcasing their skills in a double points race against the top riders from Europe, in a floodlit main event on the Saturday evening.
Matt Duckering, secretary of Burnham BMX Club, told the Weekly News: "Because it is an Olympic year this year - and the first time the sport has been in the Olympics - there are four warm up races for riders, and one will be here.
"British Cycling chose Burnham BMX due to the vast experience for holding prestigious events within the club.
"It is absolutely fantastic for the club - we've already had two rounds of the National Series.
"It is like a young lad playing football for Burnham United being able to see Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney in their home town."
British Cycling and Burnham BMX club has raised a prize fund of more than £3,000 for the sponsored main event, to ensure top Dutch and French riders will attend.
