GODOT is a Woman will be coming to Taunton Brewhouse this May.

Residents can watch the Silent Faces show on May 20. On arrival, theatre-goers can expect to enjoy a quick-witted challenge to the Beckett Estate's ban on women and non-binary actors performing in Waiting for Godot.

The play will also feature homage to Madonna, who released the song Like a Prayer in 1989, the same year that Samuel Beckett died. The show will explore the question: if the playwright had witnessed Madonna's empowerment, would he have still banned woman from performing in his most acclaimed play?

Writer and performer, Cordelia Stevenson, said: ”Audiences can expect our usual clowning tomfoolery, plenty of theatre geekery and a bowler-hat-full of female pop icons.

"This is a show that vitally platforms trans and female voices, whilst both celebrating and challenging the theatrical canon. We’re absolutely thrilled to be taking it on the road to some of the UK’s most loved regional theatres."

Silent Faces, a female and non-binary led company with disabled and non-disabled artists, has previously performed at the Pleasance London, Edinburgh Fringe, Camden People’s Theatre, Latitude Festival, Wilderness Festival, Brighton Fringe and as part of Incoming Festival at HOME Manchester and New Diorama.

The theatre company blends clown and physical theatre in a political context.

Previous work includes the critically acclaimed A Clown Show About Rain (“Delightful”, Scotsman) and Follow Suit (“Marvellously comic and compelling”, The Stage).

This is Silent Faces' first UK wide tour, which started yesterday (Wednesday, May 10) and finishes on September 21.

Godot is a Woman is just one of a whole host of shows playing at the venue this year.

Brewhouse executive director Vickie Hobbs said: "We’re over the moon to share our summer season, which is full of opportunities for inspiration. Whether it’s a show, workshop, exhibition or simply a coffee, we look forward to welcoming you to the theatre soon.”
