6:57pm Tuesday 10th June 2008

A FORMER Bridgwater College engineering student has won a prestigious City and Guilds medal for excellence.

Simon Millard, who studied a welding and fabrication course at the college from September 2005 to June 2007, was nominated for the award by his tutor Russell Dawkins.

Russell said: "I decided to put Simon forward for the medal because of his outstanding work, commitment to learning and high levels of achievement.

"Simon worked exceptionally hard during his time at college and to a very high standard. We are very proud of him."

A report from the judging panel said: "Clearly Bridgwater College has an exceptional candidate in their cohort and it all emanates from Simon's personal ambition to be the best.

"The work represented in his portfolio is some of the best we've seen in welding and sheet metal work and to this end, we had no hesitation in recommending Simon for the medal."

Simon was invited to attend the prestigious Lion Awards Ceremony at The Brewery in London, where he discovered he had also won the Cutler Prize from the Worshipful Company of Cutlers.

He was presented with a gold medal and a cheque for £500.
