HEAVYWEIGHTS from across the country gathered in Minehead this weekend to battle it out in the first round of Britain's Strongest Man 2008.
The final events will be held on Wednesday and thursday to decide who will take the PartyPoker.com event title.
Contestants underwent a series of challenging events including pulling massive wagons at West Somerset Railway's Minehead Station, dragging anchors and flipping cars.
West Somerset Council's community and recreation portfolio holder, Cllr Neil Parbrook, said: "This is a great spectator sport.
"It's a fantastic competition and there is nothing else like it in the UK.
"We are really pleased to have been able support the event again as it's great for tourism and local people really enjoy it."
Chairman of Minehead Chamber of Trade Graham Sizer added: "We know the competition is great for the town so we have been actively promoting the event.
"As well as lifting weights, having the athletes here also provides a great lift to local trade, so we were really pleased to welcome the country's strongest men back to Minehead."
The competition is set to be screened on channel Five later this year.
