MOTORISTS in the Chard and Ilminster area are being urged to make sure they take simple precautions to beat the car criminal - that is the message from PCSO John Martin.
His "beat" covers Ilminster and Neroche which includes the villages of Donyatt, Sea, Horton, Broadway and Ashill.
PCSO Martin (pictured), who works out of Ilminster and has been in the post for two years, is warning people that the summer months tend to lead to a rise in car crime.
"Although we all enjoy hoped-for better weather, the summer months does bring with it the problem of people often leaving windows and sun roofs open when the car is unoccupied," he said.
"A car is like a shop with lots of windows with many things left on display from handbags and mobile phones to tools and satellite navigation systems.
"Please keep your car locked at all times with windows and sun roofs closed when the car is not in use even if on your own drive.
"Never leave any documents in your car as this can have major implications if stolen. Remove all valuable items including sat-nav holders from the car or van and if possible leave a note on the dash telling people that the car has been emptied of all valuables."
