Swimathon attracts record numbers

12:01pm Saturday 26th April 2008

TAUNTON Pool Swimathon in aid of Marie Curie attracted more people than ever at the weekend.

The pool was one of the leaders for swimathon recruitment in the South-West with 58 people taking part in the challenge, double that of previous years.

It meant that Taunton was closely behind Bath Sports and Leisure Centre for the Best in the South' title.

The centre will find out exactly how much has been raised after all the sponsorship money has been collected and sent to Swimathon, who will issue a certificate.

Centre manager Ruth Edwards said: "I would like to thank anyone who helped with or participated in the events at the weekend."

People can still bid for items in the charity auction including two Swimathon T-shirts signed by Duncan Goodhew, a Zoggs swimming bag and tickets to see a day's LV County Championship Cricket match. Call 01823-284108 to bid.

RESULTS: Individual 5K: 1st - Michael Masters.

Team 5K: 1st - Welly Lifeguards.

2.5K: 1st - Jessica Fairfax

1.5K: 1st - Alan Thomas in 25min 40 sec.
