PEOPLE in Crewkerne are welcoming the arrival of the new Waitrose store, due to open in the autumn.

Reactions to the supermarket giant have been positive, despite building work disrupting the flow of traffic and causing parking shortfalls in the town centre.

Work on the South Street development got underway in October and has resulted in a complete overhaul of the area, with traffic restrictions put in place and a change to town centre parking facilities.

A temporary pay and display car park has been set up in Henhayes Recreation Ground to replace the South Street car park that has been closed to make way for contractors.

But the mood of the townspeople remains upbeat.

Ken and Barbara Hutton of Crewkerne said: "We have been shopping in Waitrose for the past seven years and think it will be very good for the town.

"The facilities that the supermarket is providing will benefit all the residents."

The development will also include a new day centre and a 272-space car park, split over two levels, which will serve the shop and the town centre.

Simon Wotton of Merriot said: "I think it is good news for Crewkerne as it will encourage people from nearby villages to shop in the town instead of going to larger places such as Yeovil."

But concerns have been raised over whether Crewkerne needs another supermarket, with Somerfield and the Co-Op in close proximity to the new store.

Others have argued that the site is too small for the scale of development proposed.

Peter Osmond of West Chinnock said: "They should have considered the flow of traffic more carefully, the Co-Op lorries look like they are struggling to make into the delivery bay because of the way that they have been redirected."

Tell us what you think! Will Waitrose benefit Crewkerne or cause problems for exisitng businesses?

These supermarket chains won't be satisfied until they have turned every small village and market town into ghost towns. I think supermarkets should be banned from opening stores within a sensible radius of each other like Yeovil and Taunton. I suppose the only good think about it is that it's not a Tesco store!

Waitrose isn't another Tesco's. It's a far superior store, I'd travel from Chard to visit Waitrose, it's good news for Crewkerne.

I'd never think of making a trip to Crewkerne usually. So it can only be good news for the traders in the town as well.

I can't believe that Tesco are thinking of adding more stores to an already saturated market place.
As for making a special trip to Crewkerne to go to Waitrose that sounds like such an enviornmentally friendly think to do. Plus how is shopping in a supermarket going to help the smaller traders in the town, surely by buying from Waitrose you are taking business away from the smaller independant trader!

You are so lucky to be getting a Waitrose - its a great store and I'll certainly be ditching Sainsburys and making the weekly trip from Taunton (until Ocado start home deliveries that is!).

this isn't your usual Waitrose, it is sourcing all/most of its produce from local source.

To compare Waitrose with Tesco is a non-starter. I have worked for companies who have supplied both Tesco and Waitrose, and by far Waitrose were the best. Willing and able to work with the supplier and local community.

I do not understand why people belive that Waitrose is going to be such a benefit to Crewkerne rather that a Tesco store. Has anyone been in a Waitrose store, everything is over priced, no wonder why the town will be unaffected, most of Crewkerne will not be able to shop there. As for a Tesco store affecting the towns trade, it is not going to affect it anymore than two supermarkets in the town. We are in the twenty first centry, people need to have choice on where they get their shopping from, not to have their decisions made by a bunch of town officals. Bring on Tesco, you get my vote.

I think these supermarkets could do something for people in rural areas by extending their delivery services. I live near Chard, but none of them will deliver, not Tesco, Sainsbury or Waitrose. They could save us all a lot of mileage by doing so.
